Indianapolis Woman Builds Business in Safe Household Products

“It’s scary to think about the amount of toxins we are unknowingly exposed to on a daily basis,” says Jodi Trotter, owner of a new Indianapolis business helping families attempt to live free from these toxins. “People know the dangers of second hand smoke or being exposed to pesticides, but they don’t often think about the toxic chemicals left behind by household products on their dishes, counters, clothing, or furniture. Those toxins can then leach into our food, be absorbed through our skin, or even inhaled. “

Enter Retro Betty’s, a business that helps families, including their pets, live free from these dangers. Trotter started Retro Betty’s after learning to create her own safe household products. “My husband and I had been trying for many years to start a family to no avail. With neither of us suffering from any medical conditions that would cause such issues, we had to look at our lifestyle.“

Trotter and her husband became acutely aware of every item that got near their bodies. She began researching how each product she used in her home could affect her body’s ability to become pregnant. “I learned that virtually all commercial laundry detergents and cleaning products contain endocrine disruptors which affect your natural balance of hormones and can cause, among other things, inhibited fertility.  But even scarier was the fact that they contained numerous known carcinogens. Even the products labeled as green still contained toxins. I knew I had to take matters into my own hands.”

After learning how to replace all of her household products with safe, non-toxic versions, she took her knowledge to the masses. Trotter opened Retro Betty’s and began selling these products to others who shared her concerns. Trotter says, “My grandmother’s generation knew how to make the products they needed to keep a clean home. It is an art that has been lost. Our modern lives are ones of convenience and sadly that has come at a cost. We keep a clean home to keep our family healthy, but are unaware of the dangers we are actually bringing into our home. These products have been linked to varying issues, including ADHD, autism, cancer, obesity, infertility, birth defects, and miscarriage.“

Retro Betty’s sells varying types of safe, all natural cleaning products, with even more currently in development.
